The Situation

On March 7th, 2020 the first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported in Peru. 1 One week later, the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency 2 , banning international travel and implementing a strict quarantine within the country. Despite the country’s rapid response, Peruvians experienced an exponential growth of confirmed COVID-19 cases throughout April and May.

On June 7th, Peru passed the United States in total number of confirmed cases per 1 million people. Since then, the country has consistently reported the top three highest per a capita infection rate in countries with a population above 5 million. 3 After extending the country-wide quarantine for months, the Peruvian Government lifted restrictions, on July 1st, for 18 of the country's regions, including Cuzco. 4

As regions emerge from isolation, the likelihood for an outbreak inevitably increases. Handwashing with antibacterial soap and clean, running water is essential in COVID-19 prevention.

Our Response

In response to the increasing cases in Peru, we connected with our local partner in Cuzco, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL).

Together, we designed a plan to fund and deliver essential resources and knowledge to the community of Occopata, Peru which is home to 286 families.

On June 8th, our partners at USIL worked with community members to construct two public handwashing stations with running water and antibacterial soap. The stations were each equipped with infographics showing effective handwashing techniques.

Families were encouraged to attend an educational seminar, hosted by USIL, focusing on handwashing and other best practices for COVID prevention.

Each family also received a WASH package containing antibacterial soap, alcohol-based sanitizer, masks, cleaning solution, and an educational flyer on COVID prevention, translated to Quechua (the indigenous language spoken throughout Peru). Extra materials were made available to 10 families in the neighboring community of Ancas Chaca.

Call to Action

The quarantine in Peru has been lifted in 18 of the country’s 25 regions. As travel restrictions loosen and commerce increases, many underserved communities will be exposed to the virus.

Thousands of families in these communities do not have access to running water and other basic disease prevention resources that are crucial in avoiding a devastating outbreak.

33 Buckets is committed to replicating our COVID-19 prevention initiative in other communities in the Cuzco region.

For $15, you can enable one family to have public access to running water, sanitation resources, and tailored educational information on how to keep their loved ones and themselves healthy.
