Implementation date: July 2019
Population Served: 60
System Used: Household filters
The community of Ccoyllorpuqio is divided into two parts, the higher and the lower communities. 33 Buckets worked with the lower community, which has one of the least developed water systems that we have encountered. They get their water from two spring boxes on the ground, where water naturally bubbles up, without any protection against contamination. They pipe the water to their homes using hoses without any treatment, except for boiling the water sometimes. Often, children and adults get stomach illnesses in Ccoyllorpuqio from drinking untreated water.
Because the municipality of Santiago has plans to develop its water system in the future, we have provided them with a solution that can serve them for the next few years. Each of the 19 families in Ccoyllorpuqio was given a Sawyer filter, which works using ultrafiltration so that they can filter water a couple of times a day and store that water for when they come home after working in the field. Both the community and the municipality were trained to clean the filters so that they may work up to 10 years. Now the community members will be able to enjoy clean healthy water after working in the field or after a day at school.
